Short story contest, deadline August 12, 2011

What are you doing to sharpen your writing skills? Here is a challenge.
Boise State Public Radio along with the Idaho Department of Tourism and The Story Initiative at Boise State University are sponsoring a writing contest open to anyone with an Idaho story to tell. Here’s the kicker. Stories must be no longer than 120 words and must mention at least one Idaho location.
A short story in 120 words? Is that possible?
Yes. I’ll show you how.
I recently attended a workshop where we were required to write a story spurred by a picture from a magazine. In my picture, two boys stood beside a barn, their cowboy hats tipped over their faces. All you could see was their chins. We had fifteen minutes to write a story. When we were finished, we were instructed to count the words in our story and cut the scene by 25%. We were then instructed to reduce the story to one sentence.
What? Impossible? No, it wasn’t. It did take some creative thinking though, and what I discovered was that paring the story made the heat rise. Every word had to pack a punch.
To illustrate, here is what I wrote:
Jonathan’s hat teetered on his head, always tipped so I could never see his eyes. I’ve know Jonathan since he was a toddler and though he has changed dramatically through the years there has always been one thing constant, the way each straw hat he dons dips slightly so I cannot see his eyes, or whether or not he is listening to me as I speak, or if his eyebrow teaks and twitches when I talk about his sister Cara.
In his younger years, Jonathan’s hats changed rapidly, almost faster than the size of his T-shirts and Levis. His body grew fast, but his head seemed to grow faster, sprouting as if it were trying to grow away from his body. The first hat I remember was a straw cowboy hat his grandmother had given him on his first birthday. It was woven from straw and had a red string that wrapped around his chin.
25% cut

One sentence
Jonathan’s hat teetered on his head like a shadow every time I asked about Cara.
Try it. In 120 words or less, write a story about Idaho. Pick any subject, say the Malad Gorge, and in a stream of consciousness way, write everything that comes to mind about the gorge. Don’t ponder, just free write for fifteen minutes. When you’re finished, begin revising, cutting useless and redundant words like small, very, ly adjectives, etc. Revise again and again until you have 120 words. When you compare the two versions of your story, I bet you will discover that your second version is clearer, tighter, and more powerful.

‘ONE MINUTE IDAHO’ STORY WRITING CONTEST
Boise State Public Radio (BSPR), along with the Idaho Department of Tourism and The Story Initiative at Boise State University, present “One Minute Idaho,” a writing contest open to anyone with an Idaho story to tell. Stories must be no longer than 120 words and must mention at least one Idaho location. Entries may be mailed or emailed by midnight, Aug. 12. Contestants may send multiple entries.
The “One Minute Idaho” writing contest is part of BSPR’s ongoing effort to engage with the community, and the contest plays a significant role in demonstrating the important contributions individual experiences make to the community and state.
The top three winning stories will be recorded, posted on the BSPR website for download and aired on BSPR stations. Winners also will receive tickets to see Ira Glass, host and executive producer of National Public Radio’s This American Life, at the Morrison Center on Nov. 5, to a reception prior to the main event and an overnight stay at an Idaho bed and breakfast. Glass will select one of three winning stories to read aloud from the stage of the Morrison Center.

LICC TROPHY

Each of the 15 Final Selection winners will receive a segment of the LICC Awards Trophy (slate). When each trophy is fit together, it will form a completed piece of art work, like a jigsaw puzzle.

On the 10th anniversary of LICC, all the artist along with their trophies, will gather together and present their altered trophy. At that time, these piece will be united, combined, and put on display at an exhibition in London. After the exhibition they will be returned to the artists.

Theme: How does girls' and boys' equality in education help us all?

Partners of the United Nations Girls’ Education Initiative (UNGEI), East Asia and the Pacific (EAP) and South Asia (SA), are pleased to invite entries for the 3rd contest on promoting gender equality in education.
This year, you are welcome to submit drawings that will illustrate your thoughts on how girls’ and boys' equality in education can help us all.

Awards
The 13 winning drawings will be featured in UNGEI (EAP and SA) “Gender in Education Calendar 2012,” which will be distributed widely throughout the Asia-Pacific region. The contest winners will receive official certificates of merit and a copy of the Calendar 2012. Click here to see previous calendars.

The winning drawings will also be posted on the organizers’ respective websites. Additionally, winning drawings and all other entries in the contest will be used by UNGEI partner agencies in their respective publications, presentations, websites and promotional and advocacy materials.

2011 International Smart Gear Competition

World Wildlife Fund (WWF) announced the launch of the 2011 International Smart Gear Competition today, to find innovative ways to reduce the amount of fisheries bycatch. Open to anyone from fisherman, backyard inventors and students, the competition will be open from March 1 to August 31, 2011.

“WWF’s goal with the Smart Gear competition is to inspire innovative ideas for environmentally-friendly fishing gear,” stated WWF VP of Fisheries Bill Fox. “In addition to fishermen losing millions of dollars each year due to bycatch, many other species, sometimes endangered marine life are unintentionally and needlessly killed by antiquated fishing gear, and it is jeopardizing their survival.

This competition identifies real-world fishing solutions that allow fishermen to fish smarter while helping to maintain ocean health.”

The 2011 International Smart Gear Competition is offering a grand prize of $30,000 and two $10,000 runner-up prizes. Additionally, in partnership with the International Seafood Sustainability Foundation, the competition is offering a $7,500 special tuna prize that will be awarded to the idea that will reduce the amount of bycatch found in tuna fisheries. Tuna sustainability is the top WWF global fisheries conservation priority.

In celebration of New Harmony’s bicentennial in 2014, Historic New Harmony and the New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art, with support from the National Endowment for the Arts, are sponsoring a 2011 Bicentennial House Design Competition. Individuals or teams are invited to submit designs inspired by the traditional Harmonist Construction with emphasis on sustainable, energy efficient and affordable housing.
A. Objectives:

  • Create healthy, comfortable homes
  • Minimize monthly gas and electric expenditures by conserving energy Reduce New Harmony’s impact on natural resources

Science Fiction Short Story Contest – Deadline August 25th, 2011

To promote science fiction short stories, Kalkion is announcing the first Kalkion Short Story Contest. The goal of the contest is to encourage science fiction writing.
It’s hard to set a theme to the contest owing to the vastness of the SF (speculative fiction) genre. So, we are keeping it an open-themed contest. However, we do want to drop a few seeds in your minds. We are looking for stories with a pinch of humor and satire yet delivering a strong message. It must be entertaining as well – this is no essay contest!
More about the contest
Prize Money: US $ 140
Date: The contest starts today, May 25, 2011, and concludes on August 25, 2011. The winner will be decided on August 30, 2011.
You can send as many entries as you want.
Word Limit: 1500-3000 words. Longer or shorted entries will be rejected.
Only unpublished entries can be submitted, if you post a published entry, your submission will be disqualified. Repeat offenders will be blocked from participating in the contest.
Entries must  be send to: ‘submission@kalkion.com‘ with Contest in the Subject Line.
The contest is sponsored by Non Official Rhyme’s.
The entries will be judged by a panel of writers and editors with the help of readers. Each qualified entry will be published on Kalkion and will be open for voting by readers. The more reads and votes a story gets, the more chances it will have to get the attention of judges. Judges will decide a winner on the merits of the most popular and entertaining story.
The decision of the judges will be final and can’t be contested in any court – if you don’t agree to this condition, please don’t enter the contest.

Do you think we are heading towards a dystopian world feared by George Orwell? Do you see Apple emerging as the mega corporation gradually taking control over lives – heralding  a Nazi era in America by controlling what American’s must read and watch?
Do you see that the revolution in Middle East will change the face of the world? What kind of world do you fantasize with the Middle East emerging as a democratic region?
Do you see American spending on war leading this great country into the dark ages, buried under a mountain of debt, bailed out by China, with unemployment and hostility rife?
Can you create an amalgamation of these themes with a pinch of humor and pack it as science fiction?
There can be so many themes you can write about, so just write something which you love or something you are concerned about. Make sure there is a strong element of story and drama in it. How entertaining a story is, along with its message, will be the deciding factor for our judges.

The Tenth Glass Woman Prize will be awarded for a work of short fiction or creative non-fiction (prose) written by a woman. Length: between 50 and 5,000 words. The top prize for the tenth Glass Woman Prize award is US $500 and possible (but not obligatory) online publication; there will also be one runner up prize of $100 and one runner up prize of $50, together with possible (but not obligatory) online publication.
Subject is open, but must be of significance to women. The criterion is passion, excellence, and authenticity in the woman’s writing voice. Previously published work and simultaneous submissions are OK. Authors retain all copyright is retained by the author.
There is no reading fee.

The Salem Literary Festival announces the addition of a national writing contest, offering a $200
prize for the winning work of short fiction on a theme of A Classic Re-Told. Submissions will be read by a panel consisting of members of the Literary Festival Planning Committee and the local literary community; a selection of up to 20 finalists will be forwarded to a judging panel comprised of well-known authors and local legends (TBA). The winning author will be invited to read at the Salem Literary Festival, to be held September 23-25, 2011.
A Classic Re-Told: Choose a childhood fairy tale or story from classic
literature and rewrite it, or mash-up some old favorites with a modern twist!
The Salem Literary Festival Prize will honor an original piece of innovative fiction which
includes sharp dialogue, fully-fleshed-out characters, and an ending that makes us want to talk
about it.

Debut Novel Competition

Are you an unpublished writer?
With a piping-hot manuscript ready to blow readers’ socks off?
If you can answer ‘yes’ to both of those questions, then we want to hear from you. This is our first debut novel competition, with publication for the winning book scheduled for 2012. All being well, we are keen to make this an annual competition, but there are various factors which need to be considered before we can commit to that. For now, though, let’s look at this year’s event.
Being a new, small publisher, we’re reliant on attracting submissions from unpublished writers. We are working closely with a couple of writers at the moment with a view to publishing their novels and giving new writers their breakthrough chance is something very close to our hearts. It’s that ethos which has given rise to this debut novel competition. There is a lot of top quality fiction out there which needs a platform and we want to give one writer the opportunity to make a name for themselves.
Below are the rules for this year’s competition. If anything isn’t clear, or if you have a question not answered by the rules, please drop us a line at submissions@nemesispublishing.com
One final note – you will see that we are not charging an entry fee for this competition. We thought long and hard about this – there is, of course, an investment in our time in running such a competition, not least in reading each submission. However, as just about every writing competition has an entry fee attached, and because (in our experience) unpublished writers don’t have huge stashes of cash hidden around the house, we didn’t feel it was appropriate to charge for something that, ultimately, we hope to make some money on. It just doesn’t sit right, least not for our first attempt.
So, here you are…
THE RULES

1. Closing date for receipt of entries is midnight (London) on 14 August 2011.
2. Entrants must be over 16 years old.
3. There are no restrictions on the length of manuscript. However, ideally they should fall within the 70,000-130,000 range. A manuscript won’t be rejected if it falls outside these guidelines, but length may be an influencing factor when choosing a winner. Please submit your full manuscript when entering.
4. All entries must be accompanied by a synopsis of no more than 1,000 words and an author bio of no more than 500 words.
5. There is no restriction on genre.
6. There is no geographical restriction on entry, but all entries should be in English.
7. Entries can be submitted by post or online, although to save trees, we’d prefer to receive the latter. Postal entries must be typed and and all entries must be double-spaced. Address for postal entries: Nemesis Publishing, Debut Novel Competition 2011, 62 Ballacriy Park, Colby, Isle of Man, IM9 4LX. Email entries should be sent to submissions@nemesispublishing.com with ‘Debut Novel Competition 2011’ and the title of your manuscript in the subject box.
8. Authors may enter only one manuscript. There is NO payment fee for this competition. It is free to enter.
9. Entries will not be returned. Please keep a copy. No corrections or alterations can be made after receipt.
10. Manuscripts must be entirely the work of the entrant and must never have been previously published or broadcast or placed in another writing competition. Any entry found to have been plagiarised will be disqualified. Simultaneous submissions are welcome – but please let us know as soon as possible if your manuscript is to be published elsewhere or has been placed in another debut novel competition.
11. Entrants must not have written a novel published under a valid ISBN.
12. If you require acknowledgement of receipt of your postal entry then please enclose a stamped addressed postcard marked ACKNOWLEDGEMENT. Online entries will be acknowledged by email.
13. A shortlist of six manuscripts will be announced by 15 October 2011, with the winning manuscript announced by 30 November 2011.
14. The winning author will retain worldwide copyright on their work (including film and dramatic rights). Nemesis Publishing will hold first publication rights (print, audio and e-book). Exact publication details will be finalized once the winner has been chosen, but it’s envisaged that the winning manuscript will initially receive UK print publication and worldwide e-book publication.
15. Entry implies an acceptance of all the Nemesis Publishing Debut Novel rules. Entries that fail to comply with the entry rules and requirements will be disqualified.
16. Entries that are illegible or received after the closing date will not be considered. Nemesis is not responsible for delayed or lost entries. Proof of postage is not proof of receipt.
17. Events may occur that render the publication of the winning entry impossible due to reasons beyond the control of Nemesis, and Nemesis may, at its absolute discretion, vary, amend, suspend or withdraw the winning prize of publication with or without notice.
18. The winning author agrees to Nemesis using their name, country of residence and photograph in relation to publicity material and activities.
19. Nemesis will use the personal details of entrants only for the purposes of this competition. Personal details will not be kept on file by the Publisher and will not be passed onto any third parties.
20. The decision of Nemesis is final and no correspondence will be entered into in relation to the competition.

Free contest, 2011 Utah Original Writing/ First Book Competition (various categories), top prize: $1,000

This annual competition, established in 1958, identifies and awards Utah writers for works of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry in the form of short stories, essays, poems, and full-length manuscripts. Submissions must be original works and unpublished at the time of entry. Entries will be reviewed in a blind process by seven judges selected from outside of Utah.


Past award winners have included Ron Carlson, David Lee, Katharine Coles, Ken Brewer, Pam Houston, Lyman Hafen, Margaret I. Rostkowski, Lance Larsen, John Bennion, Scott Cairns, Rod Carney, and Susan Howe. There is no entry fee for the competition, and it is open to all Utah residents.

INTRODUCTION

For more than fifty years, the Utah Division of Arts & Museums annual Utah Original Writing Competition has honored some of Utah’s finest writers with public recognition, career assistance, and cash prizes. Numerous awardees, selected by our nationally recognized literary jurors, have continued on to significant statewide and national acclaim, bringing recognition and prestige to our state. Thanks in part to funding provided by the Utah State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts, we hope to continue this tradition far into the future.

Compilations of stories for young readers will be accepted. Maximum/Minimum length: none No part of the manuscript can be published in book form or have been accepted for publication as a book at the time of entry. (Please note: This category alternates each year. Next year it will be “Juvenile Book.”)

Class E: Poetry

First prize: $300 Second prize: $200 Specifications: A collection of 10 poems for adults; maximum length: 1,000 lines (total). The collection must have a title. If no title is provided, the judges are instructed to use the first line of the first poem. No part of the collection can be published in book form or have been accepted for publication as a book at the time of entry

Class F: Short Story

First prize: $300 Second prize: $200 Specifications: Fiction for adults; maximum length: 7,500 words No part of the collection can be published in book form or have been accepted for publication as a book at the time of entry

Class G: Personal Essay

First prize: $300 Second prize: $200 Specifications: Nonfiction for adults; maximum length: 7,500 words No part of the essay can be published in book form or have been accepted for publication as a book at the time of entry

**Important change in eligibility**

This is now a “first book” contest. Writers interested in entering A, B, C, or D cannot have a book published or accepted for publication in the category they wish to enter; however, authors can have a book published or accepted for publication in a category other than the one they wish to enter.

• Due Date: Thursday, June 30, 2011, at 5 p.m. This is a firm deadline.. Late manuscripts will not be considered.

• Residency Requirement: The competition is open to all legal residents of the State of Utah. There is no age restriction.

• Blind Judging: The author’s name should not appear anywhere on the manuscript(s).

• Limits on Entries: Writers are allowed to enter more than one category; however, only one entry per category per contestant is allowed. First and second place winners are not eligible to enter that category the next year. In the case of alternating categories, first and second place winners cannot enter the exact category they placed in until at least one round of competition in that category has taken place; however, winners are allowed to enter the alternate class in that area, or any of the other categories. (i.e. The 2010 winner of category B.i. can apply for B.ii. in 2011, but cannot apply for B.i. when it returns in 2012. The next time the winner is eligible to enter is 2013.)

• Previous Publication: Acknowledgement of previously published work should not be included with your entry.

• Judge’s Decisions are Final: Judges have sole and final authority in evaluation of manuscripts. If, in the opinion of the judge, no manuscript entered in a class is of sufficient quality to merit an award, none will be given. The judges are not identified until after the winners have been announced. Judges’ comments will be provided for First Prize and Second Prize only.

• Winning Manuscripts to Remain on File: The manuscripts of the first and second place winners in each class must remain on file with the Utah Division of Arts & Museums as part of our permanent collection. In the event a winning entry is later published, the Utah Division of Arts & Museums appreciates receiving a published copy of the work.

• Rights: Authors of winning entries retain all rights of publication.

• Disqualification: Failure to comply with these rules will result in disqualification.

AMOS is seeking review essays on any topic of atmospheric or oceanographic science for
the 2011 Student Essay Competition.

The winner will receive a prize of $300 and their essay will be published in the AMOS Bulletin. Honourable Mentions may also receive $100.

Entries are invited from current undergraduate university students (up to but not including Masters level). Why not adapt the literature review of your thesis, or turn that assignment you have slaved over into an entry, and give yourself a chance at winning $300 and of having a publication and prize to add to your CV? Finalists’ essays may also be published in the AMOS Bulletin.

Entries should be supplied via email as a pdf or in a format readable by Open Office, and accompanied by details of the entrant’s contact address and his or her university enrolment and a declaration that the essay is the student's own work..

Aims and Scope

The aim of this competition is the accurate design of the reaction to achieve a certain distance, for example by adjustment of a specific reactant. To design and construct a car that is powered with a chemical energy source that will carry a certain load to a given distance and stop. The car will be judged based on the combination of completion of a defined task, design creativity, and issues related to safety, environment and health as the model car handles chemical fuel.

All undergraduates is open for Indonesian (public universities and private universities) and international universities students of chemical and process engineering, chemistry, and further study courses are invited to contribute their know-how, creativity and ability to work in a team to succeed the provided task. The Chem-E-Car–competition consists of two parts, the poster presentation and the race. This set of rules describes the procedure of the competition as well as the determination of the winning team.

II INTERNATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST – SANT JUST DESVERN.
Objective
The Sant Just Desvern Photographic Agrupation (Agrupació Fotogràfica Sant Just Desvern) and the Shopkeepers and Traders Union (Unió de Botiguers i Comerciants de Sant Just Desvern) in collaboration with Sant Just Desvern’s council, is pleased to invite you to participate in the II International Photography Contest – Sant Just Desvern with the spirit to make our town known. Our goal is to organize a photography contest in which, among all the received pictures, a maximum of fifty will be selected to be exhibited in the balconies of Bonavista street in the town of Sant Just Desvern, in the district of Baix Llobregat. Finally, a jury of recognized technical competence in the field of photography will award the three best pictures. At the same time, during the exhibition, the II Popular Photography Contest* will take place. Anyone who wishes to do so can vote for the picture that they believe deserves to be awarded the first prize of the II International Photography Contest – Sant Just Desvern.

Both amateur and professional photographers can participate in this contest, without limitation of nationality or place of residence. Registration is free.

Presentation
Each participant can present up to three pictures.
The pictures should be uploaded on the website created for this purpose from the 23rd of april 2011. The link to this site will be given through the website previously metioned.

The pictures submitted must not have been awarded in other competitions. The pictures must be original, and may not incorporate elements produced by others. The participants must manifest that they know the bases and accept them, indicating so in the corresponding box in the section of personal data on the contest website. With their acceptance, the participants declare and certify that they are the authors of the Work presented and that they don’t incorporate elements produced by others. Copies with content contrary to the right of honour, personal and familiar privacy, and/or the image of people will not be published nor accepted.
The photographic technique is free.
Sending and format
The pictures will be sent exclusively by Internet. Each participant must fill all the mandatory fields of the “register in the contest” (“date de alta del concurso”) section from the website, and must check the box confirming that he/she knows the bases and accepts them.
The absence of data or its inexactitude may result in the exclusion from the contest.
When sending the information, each participant may attach a maximum of three pictures. Their size must be 160X106 cm, RGB mode, with a minimum of 100 ppp, in horizontal format and in jpg.
Deadline for submission of pictures
From the 23rd of April to the 24th of June 2011 at 12p.m. (local time).
Prizes
The jury will select the best three pictures between the finalists:
1st prize: 1.500 €
2nd prize: 750 €
3rd prize: 300 €
The prizes will be subject to the retentions legally established.
The winners will be notified opportunely before the prize delivery by means of an electronic mail and/or a telephone call.
Verdict and prize delivery
Among the pictures obtained, the jury will select a maximum of fifty to be exposed. Objections on the outcome will not be admitted and the verdict is final.
The verdict of selection of the fifty pictures that will be exposed in Bonavista street will be published on the 30th of June 2011 on the Sant Just Desvern Photographic Agrupation website, and will be communicated to the participants through an electronic mail and/or a telephone call. The opening ceremony of the exposition will take place the 16th of July 2011 at 12.00a.m. in Bonavista street.
The pictures selected will be exposed until the 15th of August 2011.
The jury’s final verdict will be made public during the Sant Just Desvern’s Fiesta Mayor, publishing the record in the Sant Just Desvern Photographic Agrupation website.
The awards delivery will take place during the Sant Just Desvern’s Fiesta Mayor.
Copyright
The authors of the pictures selected and awarded give the Sant Just Desvern Photographic Agrupation the right of use, diffusion, distribution, public communication, exhibition and reproduction that correspond to promotional and/or cultural purposes, being always included in the picture the name of the author.
The participants guarantee and take responsibility, in front of the organisation, of the compliance of the provisions on intellectual property and copyright for the submitted pictures, declaring that its diffusion and/or reproduction within the contest and its bases doesn’t harm nor damage others, and they assume personally any responsibility that could derive from it.
Jury
It will be formed by three members of recognised technical competence in the field of photography.
The criterion of the jury will be based on the technical quality, the aesthetics, the originality and the creativity.
No objections about the results will be admitted and the verdict is final for all purposes.
Notes
The organisation keeps its right to introduce the modifications it finds necessary and to solve any unforeseen contingency. The organisation and the participants accept the regulation of these bases.

$7,500 for Brief Writing over Spring Break? April 15 deadline

APRIL 15th DEADLINE APPROACHING FOR LEGAL BRIEF WRITING CONTEST
$7,500 PRIZE
TUPPER LAKE, NY - On Friday, November 19th 2011, the newly created Tupper Lake Business Community, Inc. announced a writing contest that is being submitted to law schools around the country, seeking students who are interested in preparing a brief concerning the influences that have had a negative effect on the Adirondack economy.

First prize for the writing contest will be $7,500; second prize $2,000; and third prize $500. All brief submissions must be received by April 15th. The panel of judges will be announced in the near future.

Committee Spokespeople Mark Moeller and Beth Johnson told the group of nearly 50 people, that there has been tremendous attention given to the environment in the Adirondack Park, with little regard to the economy. Moeller noted, "the intent of the contest is to have the law students from around the country review the influences on local businesses as well as on the regulatory agencies within the Adirondack Park, by outside parties and preservationist advocacy groups, and to prepare a brief that will be judged by a panel of experts in order to highlight and quantify the impact those influences have had on the economy and the people of the Adirondacks."

Johnson added, "we believe this group supports the true intent of the Adirondack Park Act, and believes the staff of the Adirondack Park Agency are true professionals that care about the environment and economy of the Park. This effort is not directed at them." Johnson went on to say, "there are groups who have had an undue adverse impact on our economy, and have used tactics that have come at a great cost to the local economies within the Park."

Moeller also clarified the difference between this group and ARISE. "The TLBC group has a very narrow focus with donations going for a specific purpose. ARISE has a more broad approach, and they are not set up for this type of advocacy."

The writing contest will focus specifically on Tupper Lake, knowing that much of the information provided by the students, will have a regional implication.

Attorneys Doug Wright and Kirk Gagnier, have been in contact with top law schools and, gauging the reaction by some of the professors, have reported that there seems to be overwhelming excitement about the project. Gagnier said, "there is a growing trend across the country, that advocacy group influence has come at a quantifiable cost, and this writing contest will offer a legal opinion on the impact felt in Tupper Lake."

Wright added, "there has been no discussion of this leading to a legal suit against any groups or individuals. This is an educational, research based effort that will be reviewed carefully after the submissions are made."
