World Standards Day 2012 Poster Competition

World Standards Cooperation has launched a competition to design a poster for World Standards Day 2012. This year the theme is ’Less waste, better results - Standards increase efficiency’.

International standards such as those from IEC, ISO and ITU are crucial for increasing efficiency. This issue has come to the forefront as global challenges like sustainability and financial uncertainty mean that organizations are challenged to achieve better results with less waste.

In today’s highly competitive and complex world, the issue of sustainability, viewed from an economic, environmental and societal perspective means that businesses must be more efficient across a wide range of measures and issues.

International standards are powerful tools for helping organizations capitalize their potential in the global marketplace. Developed by experts from around the world, they contain internationally harmonized best practice which can be used to measure, compare and increase efficiency and reduce waste.

Your poster proposal should be sent to wsdposter@worldstandardscooperation.org as PDF file, along with a photo and short biography of the artist(s). If your design is selected as a prize winner, you will be asked to supply on a CD:

• A high definition (300 dpi resolution) file of the poster, with a 5 mm bleed on all four sides
• The original files including fonts and graphics

The text must be editable for countries who will want to reproduce the posters in their national languages, and the files should be editable in InDesign, Photoshop or Illustrator.

There is no entry fee.

Core77 2012 Design Awards

Deadline: 10-Apr-2012
The Most Progressive Design Awards Program Returns With Two Additional Categories And a New Global Jury of Design Leaders

After a successful inaugural launch last year, Core77 - the world's first online design resource - is now accepting entries for the Core77 2012 Design Awards. With progressive categories, professional and student entry fields, globally distributed juries, in-depth video testimonials, live jury announcements and a unique trophy that honors teamwork, the Core77 Design Awards continues to be the most inclusive, transparent and web-savvy award platform in the design industry. Adding to the wide breadth of categories, this year's awards will feature two new areas - Food Design and Writing & Commentary - plus a new jury of leading design minds from around the world.

According to Allan Chochinov, Partner and Editor-In-Chief of Core77, "We created the Core77 Design Awards to reflect the diversity of design practice today and to offer more opportunities to honor design enterprise in all forms." Jacqueline Khiu, Director of the Core77 Design Awards adds, "One of the interesting points of departure with this program is the greater transparency it brings to the process of entering and judging awards. It provides faces and voices to makers and jurors, and creates a more revealing and rewarding platform to participate in."

Open for entry starting January 17, the Core77 2012 Design Awards features 17 categories ranging from established fields to new emerging practices. Of these, 15 categories offer separate entry fields for professionals and students. Entrants are also encouraged to upload video to accompany their submission, providing a personal testimony about their entry to the jury. In addition to the sliding scale of entry fees, Core77 is offering a 20% Earlybird discount to people who enter by March 13. The final deadline for entries is April 10, 2012.

The Core77 Design Award's unique judging process combines global perspectives with local expertise. For each category, Core77 handpicked Jury Captains from 13 cities and 8 countries and invited them to choose their own jury from local experts in their field. The results will be broadcast live from the home cities of each jury team, revealing their choices via online video announcements.

Winners in each category will be awarded a trophy created by the New York design studio Rich Brilliant Willing. Recognizing design as a team sport, the trophy is a metallic mold that allows multiples to be produced - allowing contributors and clients to share in the glory.

The Competition

The history of harp competitions in Russia was started in 1935, when Vera Dulova and Maria Gorelova devided first prize at the II All-union competition of musician-performers. Then competitions took place in 1945, 1963, 1980, 1988, 1992 (first prize was sponsored by SALVI). Prizewinners of these competitions became well-known performers, orchestra soloists etc.

In 1997 the I Moscow International Harp Competition (first prize was sponsored by SALVI) became a reality. The first prize - Lyon&Healy, Concert Grand Harp, Style 85 - won Anna Verkholantseva.

Vera Dulova - the chairman of jury - wrote:

"Dear friends! I am very pleased to greet all the participants and guests of the I Moscow International Harp Competition. Russian harp school which trained a large pleiad of famous all over the world musicians is now holding its I International Competition. The main goal of the competition is to promote the careers of our most outstanding young soloists making them better known to the public. I sincerely wish great success to all the participants and although only a few will receive prizes nobody will fail. Participation in the Competition is not only a great opportunity for the player to declare himself but also is an important stimulus to achieve a high level of the professional artistry. I also wish to express my deep appreciation to everyone who have contributed in making this competition possible, sponsored and supported it. I very much hope that this Competition will become a remarkable artistic event and will signify the beginning of the historical tradition of Moscow International Competitions. Good luck to those who are at the source of this event".

12 years later the II Moscow International Harp Competition dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of the great Russian harpist Vera Dulova took place. The first prize - Lyon&Healy Concert Grand Harp, Style 100, won Elizabeth Mernaya. In May 2012 Russian Harp Society announces Third Moscow International Harp Competition. The competition is announced in four divisions.

  • Skills Canada National Competition - May 13 - 16, 2012, Edmonton, AB

What is the National/Skills Canada National Competition?
Started in 1994, the Skills Canada National Competition (formally the Canadian Skills Competition) remains the only event of its kind in Canada.  It is the only national, Olympic-style, multi-trade and technology competition for young students and apprentices in the country. Every year, the event brings together approximately 500 young people from all regions of Canada, along with their parents and advisors, to compete in over 40 trade and technology areas. The competition provides an opportunity for young Canadians studying a skilled trade or technology to be tested within exacting standards and against their peers from across the nation.  Students vie to win the honour of being crowned the best in their chosen discipline.

    Does Ontario Participate?
Each year Ontario sends “Team Ontario” to compete at the Skills Canada National Competition.  Team Ontario consists of the top-placing competitors from the Ontario Technological Skills Competition (OTSC), and their advisors.  Please note not every contest offered at the OTSC advances to the National Competition, and some contests change names at the national level.  Please click here to visit the Skills Canada website for more information.  To see a complete list of which contests advance from the OTSC to the SCNC, click here
Ontario also nominates volunteers to sit on planning committees (Technical Committees) and judging panels at the national level.
