The Competition
The history of harp competitions in Russia was started in 1935, when Vera Dulova and Maria Gorelova devided first prize at the II All-union competition of musician-performers. Then competitions took place in 1945, 1963, 1980, 1988, 1992 (first prize was sponsored by SALVI). Prizewinners of these competitions became well-known performers, orchestra soloists etc.
In 1997 the I Moscow International Harp Competition (first prize was sponsored by SALVI) became a reality. The first prize - Lyon&Healy, Concert Grand Harp, Style 85 - won Anna Verkholantseva.
Vera Dulova - the chairman of jury - wrote:
"Dear friends! I am very pleased to greet all the participants and guests of the I Moscow International Harp Competition. Russian harp school which trained a large pleiad of famous all over the world musicians is now holding its I International Competition. The main goal of the competition is to promote the careers of our most outstanding young soloists making them better known to the public. I sincerely wish great success to all the participants and although only a few will receive prizes nobody will fail. Participation in the Competition is not only a great opportunity for the player to declare himself but also is an important stimulus to achieve a high level of the professional artistry. I also wish to express my deep appreciation to everyone who have contributed in making this competition possible, sponsored and supported it. I very much hope that this Competition will become a remarkable artistic event and will signify the beginning of the historical tradition of Moscow International Competitions. Good luck to those who are at the source of this event".
12 years later the II Moscow International Harp Competition dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of the great Russian harpist Vera Dulova took place. The first prize - Lyon&Healy Concert Grand Harp, Style 100, won Elizabeth Mernaya. In May 2012 Russian Harp Society announces Third Moscow International Harp Competition. The competition is announced in four divisions.
