eVolo 2013 Skyscraper Competition

eVolo Magazine is pleased to invite architects, students, engineers, designers, and artists from around the globe to take part in the eVolo 2013 Skyscraper Competition. Established in 2006, the annual Skyscraper Competition is one of the world’s most prestigious awards for high-rise architecture. It recognizes outstanding ideas that redefine skyscraper design through the implementation of novel technologies, materials, programs, aesthetics, and spatial organizations along with studies on globalization, flexibility, adaptability, and the digital revolution. It is a forum that examines the relationship between the skyscraper and the natural world, the skyscraper and the community, and the skyscraper and the city.
The participants should take into consideration the advances in technology, the exploration of sustainable systems, and the establishment of new urban and architectural methods to solve economic, social, and cultural problems of the contemporary city including the scarcity of natural resources and infrastructure and the exponential increase of inhabitants, pollution, economic division, and unplanned urban sprawl.
The competition is an investigation on the public and private space and the role of the individual and the collective in the creation of a dynamic and adaptive vertical community. It is also a response to the exploration and adaptation of new habitats and territories based on a dynamic equilibrium between man and nature – a new kind of responsive and adaptive design capable of intelligent growth through the self-regulation of its own systems.
There are no restrictions in regards to site, program or size. The objective is to provide maximum freedom to the participants to engage the project without constraints in the most creative way. What is a skyscraper in the 21st century? What are the historical, contextual, social, urban, and environmental responsibilities of these mega-structures?
eVolo Magazine is committed to continue stimulating the imagination of designers around the world – thinkers that initiate a new architectural discourse of economic, environmental, intellectual, and perceptual responsibility that could ultimately modify what we understand as a contemporary skyscraper, its impact on urban planning and on the improvement of our way of life.

Car Design Awards China 2013 contest launches

Future car designers in China are again being challenged to meet the needs of the future by entering the CDN competition which is dedicated to identifying the most promising talent. The fourth annual Car Design Awards China is now open, and entries are invited from students of any design discipline who are studying full time at a college in China.
They will work to briefs set by the design chiefs of brands including Audi, JAC, Qoros, Volvo Trucks and Volkswagen. A panel of distinguished senior designers whose background is both inside and outside China will judge their entries.
Chris Bangle was the master of ceremonies at last year's awards
The winning designed of the 'Best Exterior Design' category, 'Nissan Cross Pickup Concept' by Xu Yixiong
Prizes for the winners will be fully-funded placements at one of the international design schools which are currently being lined up as partners for the competition. An indication of the opportunity this brings for Chinese students, the schools for the 2012 winners were: the College for Creative Studies (CCS) in the US; Coventry University in the UK; Istituto d'Arte Applicata e Design (IAAD) in Italy; Strate College in France; and Umea Institute of Design in Sweden. Their students mixed with classmates from all parts of the world and were exposed to Western design teaching.
As an additional prize this year, a student winner who designs to the Volvo Trucks brief will receive a 3-month placement at the Volvo Group studio in Shanghai, plus a trip to one of the group's international studios. A brief centred on heavy commercial vehicles is a first for the competition this year.
The closing date for submissions is 11 January 2013, by which time all entries must have been uploaded to the competition website. The Awards will culminate in a glittering prize-giving ceremony held on the evening of 18 April 2013, just before the opening of Auto China 2013 (the Shanghai motor show).
All the briefs, together with how to enter, are on the competition website. Also displayed there is the work of all the past winners.
There are nine Awards in the 2013 competition, which will be made for the best entries in: exterior design; interior design; luxury concept; lifestyle design; eco solution; innovation; production model; and virtual design. The judges will select from all the entries to make an award for the best design in harmony with China's heritage.
Brilliance on display
The work of all the finalists will be on display at the Awards ceremony, along with their nervous creators. After the category winners have been announced, just one of them will receive the ultimate accolade of Student Designer of the Year.
"It was so difficult for us to decide on a winner, the entrants were so strong," commented one of the judges, Simon Loasby, Director of Design at VW China, at the concluding judging session of last year's competition. "On one hand we had very creative, out-there designs... and on the other brilliantly-resolved products."
Olivier Boulay, Vice President at Daimler's Advanced Design Center, added: "China is reinventing itself, which gives huge scope to...be creative. It's our job to encourage this direction and let these designers fly a little bit into future."
CDN has created a league table of China's design schools based on the success of their students in the past three competitions. The Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) tops the league, ahead of Tsinghua University and Huazhong University of Science and Technology.
The league rankings use a scoring system based on which students achieve shortlisted, finalist and winner status. The league is intended to track the development of design teaching expertise at China's schools.
In similar vein, the 2013 competition will again acknowledge and publicise the teachers of the winning entries, recognising that raw talent alone is not enough in becoming a professional designer of the future.

Architecture and Engineering Ideas Competition

Engineering and architecture students, are you able to create innovative design solutions for Indian villages in this social initiative that seeks to find answers to settlement problems in India's villages?
Share your solutions to bring about change today.
Mera Gaon Mera Base is the debut theme of Ultratech Cement's "Innovate for India" social initiative. The competition targeted at young engineering and architecture students seeks to capture innovative design solutions for Indian villages.
India has seen an unprecedented economic growth in the last few decades primarily because of urban activities. But it would be short sighted to limit the definition of ‘developed India’ to its urban centers and the term must necessarily include the development of the backbone of India- its rural strength.
Scattered throughout India are more than 645,000 villages. These settlements range from tiny hamlets of thatched huts to larger settlements of tile-roofed stone and brick houses. It is in these villages that India's most basic occupation-agriculture-takes place, which accomplishes the challenging task of feeding our nation. Villages in India should be evolving as one of its strengths and on par with urban India, if India is to aim for sustained growth.
1. FOR CIVIL ENGINEERING STUDENTS:
Task: Select a village, study its pertinent and critical problems and probe into effective solutions for the same. Propose real time, solutions for an existing infrastructure/ engineering design problem in a village.
Aim: To understand the wealth of the incremental intelligence that is a way of life in villages while analysing its drawbacks with a critical eye. The “Mera Gaon Mera Base” challenge asks engineering and architecture students to turn their skills to providing solutions that can enrich life in our villages.
The scope of solutions includes:
  1. Infrastructure Engineering
  2. Structural Engineering
  3. Sanitary Engineering
  4. Water Resources Engineering
The path:
  • It is imperative that the team identifies and does a site visit of the village for which the design is proposed. A short note on why a particular village was selected will help establish the larger context of the proposed solution (not more than 100 words).
  • Documentation and a clear articulation of the existing problem and all facts associated is the second step (not more than 100 words).
  • A brief note on the brainstorming leading up to the solution will be appreciated (not more than 100 words, this is optional).
The proposed solution:
  • The idea (not more than 500 words)
  • Concept sheet (the participant can choose to represent his idea visually through sketches, renderings, and a walkthrough.
  • Technical drawings as appropriate: site plans, plan, sections and elevations
  • Design details and perspective views
The participant can in addition also make a film, not more than 5 minutes to support his/ her idea. While this is not mandatory we aggressively encourage every participant/s to do so.
Guidelines - The solution should:
  • Be feasible, economical and in - context
  • Show initiative and innovative thinking
  • Be simple, clear and original - from idea to presentation
2. FOR ARCHITECTURE STUDENTS:
Task: Propose design solutions for an existing design problem in a village. The ideas could range from proposing better solutions for the village school, community hall, etc.
The path:
  • It is imperative that the team identifies and does a site visit of the village for which the design is proposed. A short note on why a particular village was selected will help establish the larger context of the proposed solution (Not more than 100 words).
  • Documentation and a clear articulation of the existing design problem is second step (not more than 100 words).
  • A brief note on the brainstorming leading up to the solution will be appreciated (not more than 100 words, this is optional).
The proposed solution:
a) The idea (not more than 500 words)
b) Concept sheet (the participant can choose to represent his idea visually through sketches, renderings, walkthrough.
c) Technical drawings: site plan, plans, sections and elevations (as technical drawings)
d) Details and perspective views
The participant can in addition also make a film, not more than 5 minutes to support his/ her idea. While this is not mandatory we aggressively encourage the participant/s to do so.

Guidelines - The solution should:
  • Be feasible, economical and in – context.
  • Show initiative and innovative thinking.
  • Be simple, clear and original - from idea to presentation.
Application Details:
  • Register yourself by following the "Go Compete" button.
  • After registering the challenge has 3 aspects: 1. Observe, 2. Analyze and 3. Resolve.

World Standards Day 2012 Poster Competition

World Standards Cooperation has launched a competition to design a poster for World Standards Day 2012. This year the theme is ’Less waste, better results - Standards increase efficiency’.

International standards such as those from IEC, ISO and ITU are crucial for increasing efficiency. This issue has come to the forefront as global challenges like sustainability and financial uncertainty mean that organizations are challenged to achieve better results with less waste.

In today’s highly competitive and complex world, the issue of sustainability, viewed from an economic, environmental and societal perspective means that businesses must be more efficient across a wide range of measures and issues.

International standards are powerful tools for helping organizations capitalize their potential in the global marketplace. Developed by experts from around the world, they contain internationally harmonized best practice which can be used to measure, compare and increase efficiency and reduce waste.

Your poster proposal should be sent to wsdposter@worldstandardscooperation.org as PDF file, along with a photo and short biography of the artist(s). If your design is selected as a prize winner, you will be asked to supply on a CD:

• A high definition (300 dpi resolution) file of the poster, with a 5 mm bleed on all four sides
• The original files including fonts and graphics

The text must be editable for countries who will want to reproduce the posters in their national languages, and the files should be editable in InDesign, Photoshop or Illustrator.

There is no entry fee.

Eligibility

Anyone worldwide is welcome to take part in the competition.

Prize

The designer(s) of the best poster will win 1500 Swiss Francs (approx. 1,670 USD), with the three runners-up receiving 500 Swiss Francs each.

Core77 2012 Design Awards

Deadline: 10-Apr-2012
The Most Progressive Design Awards Program Returns With Two Additional Categories And a New Global Jury of Design Leaders

After a successful inaugural launch last year, Core77 - the world's first online design resource - is now accepting entries for the Core77 2012 Design Awards. With progressive categories, professional and student entry fields, globally distributed juries, in-depth video testimonials, live jury announcements and a unique trophy that honors teamwork, the Core77 Design Awards continues to be the most inclusive, transparent and web-savvy award platform in the design industry. Adding to the wide breadth of categories, this year's awards will feature two new areas - Food Design and Writing & Commentary - plus a new jury of leading design minds from around the world.

According to Allan Chochinov, Partner and Editor-In-Chief of Core77, "We created the Core77 Design Awards to reflect the diversity of design practice today and to offer more opportunities to honor design enterprise in all forms." Jacqueline Khiu, Director of the Core77 Design Awards adds, "One of the interesting points of departure with this program is the greater transparency it brings to the process of entering and judging awards. It provides faces and voices to makers and jurors, and creates a more revealing and rewarding platform to participate in."

Open for entry starting January 17, the Core77 2012 Design Awards features 17 categories ranging from established fields to new emerging practices. Of these, 15 categories offer separate entry fields for professionals and students. Entrants are also encouraged to upload video to accompany their submission, providing a personal testimony about their entry to the jury. In addition to the sliding scale of entry fees, Core77 is offering a 20% Earlybird discount to people who enter by March 13. The final deadline for entries is April 10, 2012.

The Core77 Design Award's unique judging process combines global perspectives with local expertise. For each category, Core77 handpicked Jury Captains from 13 cities and 8 countries and invited them to choose their own jury from local experts in their field. The results will be broadcast live from the home cities of each jury team, revealing their choices via online video announcements.

Winners in each category will be awarded a trophy created by the New York design studio Rich Brilliant Willing. Recognizing design as a team sport, the trophy is a metallic mold that allows multiples to be produced - allowing contributors and clients to share in the glory.

The Competition

The history of harp competitions in Russia was started in 1935, when Vera Dulova and Maria Gorelova devided first prize at the II All-union competition of musician-performers. Then competitions took place in 1945, 1963, 1980, 1988, 1992 (first prize was sponsored by SALVI). Prizewinners of these competitions became well-known performers, orchestra soloists etc.

In 1997 the I Moscow International Harp Competition (first prize was sponsored by SALVI) became a reality. The first prize - Lyon&Healy, Concert Grand Harp, Style 85 - won Anna Verkholantseva.

Vera Dulova - the chairman of jury - wrote:

"Dear friends! I am very pleased to greet all the participants and guests of the I Moscow International Harp Competition. Russian harp school which trained a large pleiad of famous all over the world musicians is now holding its I International Competition. The main goal of the competition is to promote the careers of our most outstanding young soloists making them better known to the public. I sincerely wish great success to all the participants and although only a few will receive prizes nobody will fail. Participation in the Competition is not only a great opportunity for the player to declare himself but also is an important stimulus to achieve a high level of the professional artistry. I also wish to express my deep appreciation to everyone who have contributed in making this competition possible, sponsored and supported it. I very much hope that this Competition will become a remarkable artistic event and will signify the beginning of the historical tradition of Moscow International Competitions. Good luck to those who are at the source of this event".

12 years later the II Moscow International Harp Competition dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of the great Russian harpist Vera Dulova took place. The first prize - Lyon&Healy Concert Grand Harp, Style 100, won Elizabeth Mernaya. In May 2012 Russian Harp Society announces Third Moscow International Harp Competition. The competition is announced in four divisions.
